How to engage citizens in the energy transition
The shift to sustainable energy is not just about technology, it’s primarily about the interaction between citizens and the system. This is the conclusion of research by Christoph Kogler and Rob Nelissen (Academic Collaborative Center for Climate and Energy at Tilburg University). People only get involved when the urgency is clear, and efforts are distributed fairly. It’s not the frontrunners, but the large middle group that determines success: the more visible and “normal” sustainability becomes, the faster others follow.
